Southwest AirlinesВ® Rapid RewardsВ® Premier Credit Card | Review #8211; Earn 50,000 Bonus Points

Do you fly Southwest Airlines?

Do you want to earn free flights as well as hotel stays, gift cards and more including international flights?

Then read on for my Southwest AirlinesВ® Rapid RewardsВ® Premier Credit Card review and see if the card is good for you.

Let#8217;s look at the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card:

The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card is offering up a great bonus pointsВ offer!В

You earn 50,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000 in the first three (3) months of opening your account.В That equates to over $800 in Wanna Get AwayВ® Fares (their rewards program) which can get you two free round-trip flights.В So for a new member, you are potentially getting a bonus of 4 flights right off the bat. В There may be government fees you have to pay that aren#8217;t included (these can be as low as $10).

That#8217;s a nice way to start off a card!

This card is part of Southwest Airline#8217;s rewards program, Rapid RewardsВ®, rather than calling their points #8220;airline miles.#8221;В You still redeem your points toward airline fares but you can also redeem the points for international travel to over 800 destinations on 50+ airline carriers; hotel stays at over 70,000 hotels worldwide; car rentals from major rental companies; gift card to some of your favorite brands (like Amazon.com, iTunes, The Home Depot, and more); and vacation packages.

How do you earn Rapid Rewards points?

You earn 2 points for every $1 spent on all Southwest Airlines and AirTranВ® purchases made with your card.В You#8217;ll also earn 2 points on all Southwest Rapid Rewards Hotel and Car Rental partner purchases.В You earn 1 point for every $1 spent on all other purchases. В See, you get to rack up points whenever you use your card.

Anniversary Bonus #8211; Every year, on your anniversary, you earn 6,000 bonus points.В That#8217;s like $100 that can be redeemed for a Wanna Get Away fare.

Balance Transfer Bonus #8211; You can earn 1 point for each $1 in balance transfers you make for up to 15,000 points.В This has to be done within the first 90 days of opening your account. [Be aware there is a 3% balance transfer fee.]

Tier Qualifying Points Bonus #8211; The Rapid Rewards program has different tiers (the higher the tier the better your benefits). В Well, you can earn 1,500 tier qualifying points (to get you to the next tier up) for every $10,000 in purchases you make.В You can potentially get up to 15,000 points this way (yes, that is a LOT of spending, but some people do it).

Other Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card Benefits

Southwest rewards card review

Where will you be landing when you earn your 2 roundtrip tickets?

No Change Fees #8211; If you#8217;ve ever needed to change a flight for some reason you know how annoying it is to have to pay fees that end up being a large percentage of the ticket price.В With Southwest Airlines there are no change fees if you need to change your flight.

Bags Fly Free #8211; Your 1st and 2nd bags fly free.В Compare this with many carriers that are charging fees just for your first bag.

No Foreign Transaction Fees #8211; If you travel internationally then you won#8217;t be paying extra fees on your purchases just because you are oversees.

If you fly Southwest Airlines already, then having the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card gives you additional ways to earn Rapid Rewards points with your airline purchases and everyday purchases.В The fact that you can also redeem points for international flights as well as for hotels and car rentals makes this a nice airline miles or a travel rewards card. В Be aware there is a $99 annual fee for this card. В If you use the card and don#8217;t carry debt then the bonus points you earn may more than make up for the fee.

And of course you#8217;re getting a juicy limited-time bonus that can get you two (2) round-trips flights!

*Always make sure you understand the terms of a credit card before you sign up. В Terms for this card may change after this publishing.

Does Southwest Have the Best Airlines Rewards Program in the U.S.?

Accumulating reward miles doesn#8217;t do much good if you can#8217;t actually use them. Southwest Airlines earned the top spot in a recent Consumer Reports rewards programs comparison in part because they have more rewards travelers than any other airline.

Southwest flew 103.1 million passengers in the United States in 2014. A whopping 11.9 million (11.5%) of these seats were booked using Southwest#8217;s Rapid Rewards program. Frequent flyers often complain that it#8217;s difficult to redeem rewards on many airlines, but that isn#8217;t a problem with Southwest, which considers every seat is an award seat. That means travelers don#8217;t have to hunt down eligible seats or book flights at undesirable times.

By comparison, Jet Blue flyers only book 4.5% of their seats using rewards miles. Delta Air Lines, a much larger airlines, had 5.6 million of its domestic seats booked with rewards. United Airlines ranked just behind Delta with 5 million domestic award tickets.

While some travelers aren#8217;t fond of certain aspects of traveling on Southwest Airlines, there#8217;s no denying that its rewards policies are generous. Southwest rewards tickets don#8217;t require any booking fees and rewards travelers are never caught off guard by last-minute booking fees.

Rather than counting how many miles travelers fly, the Southwest Rapid Rewards program focuses on dollars spent to calculate rewards. The Southwest Rapid Rewards program offers six to 12 points per dollar spent on Southwest tickets. That means passengers earn 1,200 rewards miles on a discounted $200 Wanna Get Away fare. Standard tickets earn 10 points per dollar spent, which means a $200 fare would net 2,000 rewards miles. Business Select fares earn 12 points per dollar spent on trips.

Flying isn#8217;t the only way to earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points. The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Card allows flyers to rack up points fast. New card customers are granted 25,000 points just for signing up. Card members are given 3,000 or 6,000 points on each anniversary of activating their cards.

Unlike with many airline rewards programs, Southwest Rapid Rewards points never expire. That means you don#8217;t have to worry about traveling on Southwest every year or signing up for the airline#8217;s credit card to keep earned miles.

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Card Review: Best Domestic Flights

If you love traveling throughout the U.S. and Caribbean like I do, the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Card might be for you. Offering easy to earn points that translate into free and reduced airfare, this is one of my favorite airline cards around.

Southwest is already known for low fares and great service. Now that it#8217;s added destinations throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, it#8217;s become an even better option for those wanting to travel slightly closer to home. In addition to making your flights even cheaper, the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card provides a ton of benefits to help you travel in style. Let#8217;s check it out!

Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card Highlights

Think the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Card may be for you? Here are a few things you need to know:

  • Signup Bonus: Now is the perfect time to get the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card. For a limited time, you#8217;ll earn 50,000 bonus points when you open a new account and spend $2,000 in the first 3 months. Those points are usually good for 2 round-trip tickets to the Caribbean!
  • Anniversary Bonus: Every year, you#8217;ll earn a 6,000 point bonus on your cardmember anniversary.
  • Earn Points for Spending: Get 2X points for every dollar spent with either Southwest or select hotel/car rental partners. Get 1X points on everything else.
  • No Blackout Dates: Unlike some airline rewards programs, you#8217;ll never have to worry about blackout dates.
  • Fare-based Pricing: You can even use your points to book flights that are on sale! With Southwest, cheaper fares means fewer points.
  • Free Checked Bags: Adding checked bags to your flights can really add up. With Southwest, you get to check your first two bags for free.
  • No Expiration: Your points don#8217;t expire for as long as you keep your account open.
  • Counts Toward Companion Pass: The points you earn with this card count toward earning the Southwest Companion Pass. With this benefit, you can fly a companion with you for free, even if you paid with points. You can read our Companion Pass review here.

There#8217;s a lot to like about the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Card. As we mentioned, right now, you can earn 50,000 bonus points for spending $2,000 in the first 3 months. That#8217;s good for 2 round-trip flights to the Caribbean, if you#8217;re flexible. Plus, those points count toward the 110,000 points you#8217;ll need to earn the Southwest Companion Pass. This offer only comes around a couple of times a year, so take advantage of it while you can. And if you like to fly Southwest like I do, you should jump on this offer right away.

As much as I love a good signup bonus, I also love that redeeming my Rapid Rewards® Points is based entirely on the actual airfare price. Southwest flights are often the cheapest available, but they also run some ridiculous deals throughout the year. I#8217;m talking about domestic round-trip tickets for less than $100! And since the point redemption is fare-based, each time Southwest runs a sale, my points stretch even further. Plus, there are no blackout dates or rewards caps. That means I can use my points on any flight with available seating#8230;and I can still check 2 bags for free!

Oh yeah, have I mentioned that Southwest now flies to 11 destinations throughout Mexico and the Caribbean? It#8217;s true! You can now use your points to book free flights for your entire family to places like Jamaica, Costa Rica, Belize, and Aruba. That#8217;s pretty sweet, especially if you#8217;re a beach bum like me.

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Card

If you want to get the most of your Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card, be sure to use it whenever you book travel through Southwest or their participating hotel and rental car partners. You#8217;ll earn 2X points on every dollar spent, which really adds up if you#8217;re a frequent traveler, you can also check out our Complete Cheap Vacations Guide for more tips on how to save while traveling. Also, use your points to book flights when they#8217;re on sale. Because redeeming your points is based on the actual fare price, you can really stretch those points further.

The best way to use the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Card is to pair it with another card. Doing so can help you earn even more free travel and could help you earn the Southwest Companion Pass. If you are a business owner, you should definitely consider the business version of the card as well. You#8217;ll double your signup bonus and be within a hair of the points needed for the Companion Pass.

Better yet, pair the Southwest Card with the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card. With this card, you#8217;ll also earn a 50,000 point signup bonus, but you#8217;ll have to spend $4,000 in 3 months. Those points transfer at a 1:1 ratio to the Southwest Rapid Rewards® loyalty program AND they count toward the Companion Pass. If you decide not to transfer them to Southwest, you can still redeem them for $500 in gift cards at places like Kohl#8217;s, Home Depot, Lowe#8217;s, and more. Or, redeem them for $625 in other travel products when booked through the Chase portal. You can also transfer them to loyalty programs through travel partners like Marriott, Hyatt, IHG, and United Airlines. There is a $95 annual fee, but it#8217;s waived for the first year. Read our complete review.

Although the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card is one of our favorite airline cards, there are some things you need to watch out for.

  • Annual Fee: There#8217;s a $99 annual fee which is not waived. Of course, the signup bonus more than makes up for it the first year. But, if you don#8217;t travel much or don#8217;t use the points, the fee may not be worth it to you.
  • No Flights to Europe or Asia: Although Southwest now travels all around the U.S., Mexico, and the Caribbean, it does not offer any flights to popular international destinations in Europe or Asia. If you#8217;re wanting to book travel there, you should look at other cards.
  • Points Don#8217;t Transfer: Personally, we love flying Southwest whenever we travel domestically or to the Caribbean. However, if you don#8217;t like Southwest or don#8217;t live near a Southwest hub, this may not be the card for you. Consider other travel rewards cards instead.

Alternatives to the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Card

Most of the major airlines now have their own co-branded credit cards that allow you to earn points and save on flights. If you#8217;re looking to head to Europe or Asia, you might consider the Citi®/AAdvantage® Platinum Select Mastercard® or the United MileagePlus® Explorer Card instead.

Southwest rewards card reviewLooking for a more flexible rewards program that you can use with any airline? Try the Discover it® Miles Card. There is no annual fee, and you redeem miles as a statement credit. That means you can use your miles with any airline or hotel and never have to worry about blackout dates. The card earns an unlimited 1.5X miles per dollar spent across all categories. Plus, Discover doubles your miles after your first year! So, if you#8217;re looking for a flexible program with no fees, the Discover it® Miles Card is a great alternative. Check out our complete review, or learn how to get yours here.

The Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card is a great way to earn cheap flights with Southwest Airlines. The points are easy to earn, the benefits are great, and they can be used toward earning the Southwest Companion Pass (which happens to be my favorite perk of all). Southwest has always been my favorite airline for domestic flights. But now that they#8217;re serving destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean, using the Southwest Rapid Rewards® Premier Card makes getting to some of my favorite places even cheaper.

Instant Approval for $4,000 667 671

I applied for this card and was approved instantly for $4,000. My scores are at 667 671 according to CK. Very excited about getting airline miles! My best friend has this card and pays for everything from groceries to utility bills on this card, and then pays them off right away. She flies everywhere for free!

They don#039;t give you the miles promised

Watch them carefully. I did the $50K signup. (25K right away and 25K after spending like $3K in 3 months.) I spent the $3K right away and got the 25K miles. Then after the 3 months was up and no extra 25K miles I called them. They said. too bad. you should#39;ve called sooner. I asked how I was supposed to know that I didn#39;t have to wait the 3 months for the extra 25K miles and they had no answer. In other words, you need to read all fine print or they screw you out of the promised miles. I cancelled immediately.

Great card for frequent travelers!

I applied for this card about two years ago when I started a job which required me to travel. At the time, credit scores were around 620. I was approved for a $2k credit limit. After two years of using this card and paying on time, I called yesterday and asked if they#39;d increase my limit. The raised it up to $7k (my scores on CK are both 660). Love this card and the travel rewards!

I earned the 50,000 bonus points on the Chase Southwest Rapid Rewards Visa. I also applied for the Chase Sapphire and received the 40,000 bonus points and transferred them to this account for a total of 90,000 (plus) miles. It#39;s a great deal and I love dealing with Chase and Southwest Airlines. The miles are so easy to redeem and no blocked out dates. Also, Chase notices fraudulent activity right away and send a text, email and phone call; I appreciate their vigilance and willingness to work with me after such occurrences. I have never had a negative experience with my Chase mortgage, bank account or credit card. I do wish there wasn#39;t an annual fee but that will continue to be my wish.

I primarily fly Southwest for business so it make sense to use this card frequently. Never have a problem getting my points and have enjoyed many free flights with rewards program. If you travel for business and use Southwest this card is a must have. If not, don#39;t get it. Very simple.
