State Farm Auto Insurance Review

State Farm offers solid coverage and excellent customer service, but it may not be your most affordable option.

State Farm is the nation’s largest auto insurer, and it’s held that position for nearly 75 years. It has built a loyal following by placing an emphasis on customer service, offering customers a quality experience whether they interact with the company online, over the phone, or in person. State Farm scored well in the latest J.D. Power survey, beating out many of its main competitors, including GEICO, Allstate, and Progressive.

If you’re looking for optional coverages like new car replacement or gap coverage, you’ll have to choose another insurer, however. State Farm offers no-frills policies that, while comprehensive, leave customers with little room for customization.

As far as affordability is concerned, State Farm consistently has higher rates than its main competitors, GEICO and Progressive. Everyone’s premium prices will be different, of course, since all insurance providers assess each driver’s risk level differently. The best way to find the lowest price on the level of coverage you want is to get quotes from multiple providers and compare them to find the best rate for you.

State Farm markets itself as “a good neighbor,” there to assist you when things go wrong. It offers quality auto insurance coverage and top-notch claims service at a rate that easily fits into most people’s budgets.

Sort of. State Farm is the nation’s largest auto insurer and for good reason. In an industry known for unhappy customers, State Farm stands out for its excellent customer service and efficient claims handling. In the latest J.D. Power survey, State Farm did well, scoring above the regional average seven out of 11 times. Customers were most impressed with the interactions they had with State Farm’s agents, both in person and over the phone.

Consumers were somewhat less satisfied with its rates. In my quote comparison, I found State Farm to be more expensive than its competitors, Progressive and GEICO, but how much more depended on the level of coverage. Its rates were within $50 of my cheapest quote for state minimum coverage, but when I chose higher limits, the cost rose significantly. You may get a different result, but you’ll have to get a quote to find out.

While State Farm offers the basic auto insurance coverages, it gives you few options to customize your policy. It doesn’t offer gap coverage or new car replacement, one or both of which are found with several of its competitors. You also can’t purchase extra coverage for any custom equipment you’ve added. State Farm does offer special coverage for antique and classic cars, though, so it’s a good choice if you’re looking to insure that type of vehicle.

  • Simple quote process: You can get a quote from State Farm in about five minutes. Just answer a few basic questions about yourself, your vehicle, and your driving record, then you’ll be presented with a quote. Customize it to fit your desired level of coverage and then purchase it directly online. If you’re not ready to buy yet, State Farm will save your quote so you can come back to it later.
  • Missing some optional coverages: State Farm doesn’t offer gap coverage or new car replacement, which can be very helpful if you total a newer vehicle that’s depreciating quickly. The company also doesn’t offer coverage for any custom equipment you’ve added since purchasing the vehicle. If you’re interested in these, you’ll want to explore other options.
  • Several ways to save: State Farm offers a good selection of discounts, including multi-policy, accident-free, and defensive driving course discounts. Your vehicle may also earn you discounts if it’s equipped with passive restraints or an anti-theft device.
  • Get rewarded for good driving: State Farm’s Drive Safe Save program monitors your driving habits and rewards you for safe behavior. You get a five percent discount for enrolling, and you could earn additional savings at every policy renewal.
  • Savings for younger drivers: State Farm offers several discounts directed at drivers under 25 to help them combat their higher premiums. These include good student and student away at school discounts, plus State Farm’s Steer Clear program, a driver refresher course that can be completed online or through the company’s mobile app. Once you’ve completed the course, you’re eligible for additional savings.
  • Coverage for antique and classic cars: State Farm is one of few major auto insurers to offer special coverage for classic and antique vehicles. In order to qualify, your vehicle must have been properly restored or maintained, and it must be driven on a limited basis. You can’t get a quote for this type of coverage online, so you’ll need to speak to your local State Farm agent to learn more.
  • Get help if your car breaks down: State Farm offers towing coverage and roadside assistance as optional add-ons to help you in the event of an unexpected breakdown. If your vehicle has to be taken in for repairs, State Farm will also cover the cost of a rental car until your vehicle is fixed and if you’re more than 50 miles away from home when the accident occurs, your travel expenses will also be covered.
  • Mobile policy access: Using State Farm’s iOS and Android apps, you can get an auto insurance quote, view policy documents, pay your bill, submit and track claims, and contact roadside assistance. If you’re a State Farm Bank customer, you can also access your accounts from the app.

The only way to find out how much a specific auto insurance policy is going to cost you is to get a quote. Insurance companies consider a variety of factors when calculating premiums, including your age, driving history, address, and vehicle make and model. Every company weighs these factors slightly differently, which is why rates vary from one company to the next.

When comparing your options, though, you should look at more than just price. Go with the company that gives you the best value for the money. Make sure the one you choose is financially strong so it’ll be there when you need it, and see what other customers have had to say about its service. It may not seem that important right now, but good customer service can go a long way toward reducing the headache of filing a claim, so it may be worth paying a few extra dollars for a policy through State Farm because of this.

All 50 states require drivers to carry auto insurance, so there’s no way around it. Getting caught without it will cost you more than an insurance premium, and getting in an accident without insurance can cost you even more. If you’re looking to save money on car insurance, try some of these strategies instead:

  • Tell your insurer about life changes. Graduating college or getting married can earn you additional savings on your auto insurance policy, so let your insurer know of these changes right away.
  • Improve your credit. Insurers use your credit history as a measure of responsibility, so a higher credit score will earn you a lower rate.
  • Choose your vehicle carefully. Go with a model that has high safety ratings and isn’t a common target for theft.
  • Limit your driving. The less time you spend on the road, the less chance you have of getting into an accident. Some insurers even give discounts to people who drive below a certain number of miles each year.
  • Take a defensive driving course. Several insurers, including State Farm, give discounts to drivers who have completed an approved defensive driving course in the last three years.
  • Choose a higher deductible. If you’re purchasing collision and comprehensive coverage, choose the highest deductible you can. You’ll have to pay more out of pocket in the event of an accident, but your monthly premiums will be a lot lower.

GEICO: Known for its affordable rates and plentiful discounts, GEICO#8217;s customer service received mixed reviews in the latest J.D. Power survey. Still, overall, it scored well, even beating State Farm in a few regions. GEICO is the only company on this list to offer mechanical breakdown coverage, which can be useful if your vehicle unexpectedly breaks down.

Allstate: Though it offers the most discounts of any company on this list, Allstate’s rates are generally some of the highest. It was rated average or below in most regions in the J.D. Power survey. The company does offer some unique rewards to safe drivers, though, like its Safe Driving Bonus Check.

Progressive: Another top auto insurer, Progressive is known for its affordable rates and many discounts. In my quote comparison, it turned out to be my most affordable option, though that may not be true for you. In terms of coverage, Progressive offers all the basics, plus several optional coverages, like pet injury, custom equipment, and gap coverage that you can’t get from State Farm.

  • USA Today wrote an article about a study published by the Consumer Federation of America that suggests that auto insurers unfairly discriminate against low-income drivers. Auto insurers disagreed, claiming the study was “rigged.” It was noted, though, that of all the insurers tested, State Farm was the fairest.
  • Crain’s Chicago Business discussed State Farm’s recent rate hikes of about three percent nationwide. It is not the only insurer to have increased its prices as of late. Allstate and GEICO have been charging more as well. When asked about these rate increases, a State Farm spokesperson said: “There are many factors that contribute to higher frequency including distracted driving, more congested driving conditions and more miles being driven.”
  • CBS News reported that State Farm has recently filed patents for devices that would enable them to gather more physiological data about their customers, including pulse, breathing and eye movements. This data is allegedly correlated to how safe you drive. The company has no immediate plans to begin developing or using this technology, but it remains a possibility for the future. When asked for comment, a State Farm spokeswoman merely responded, “Because of the nature of our innovation work and patent program, we are unable to provide further comments at this time.”

State Farm is a solid, reliable choice for auto insurance. It offers comprehensive coverage and excellent customer service; however, its rates may not be your most affordable option, but you’ll have to get a quote to find out.

state farm review

You would be hard pressed to find someone over the age of 10 in the country that isn’t aware of State Farm’s presence, or at least has heard their name. State Farm has a huge network of offices spread out all across the nation, and they’ve been in the insurance game since 1922. They have remained relevant by producing a host of life insurance policies, agreeable premiums, and an air of approachability.

Policy Benefits and Flexibility

State Farm’s bread and butter is the whole life and universal life insurance policies that are offered to their customers. These policies display State Farm’s ability to give their clientele the kind of flexibility that is needed in order to mold a policy in a way that perfectly meets whatever station in life they may be in. They are extremely flexible in the coverage periods that are offered. The company’s annuities give customers another terrific option to manage retirement funds and build an income for loved ones that do not have much tax burden.

Although the premiums are set by the usual suspects – health, age, and lifestyle – the cost of State Farm’s premiums are considered to be some of the most affordable in the business. As previously mentioned, these policies are split into two groups. The whole life policy freezes premiums for the life of the account. While this rate may appear high in the beginning in the policy, it may be considered quite affordable at the end of the policy. The universal life policy offers a flexible premium.

State Farm is well equipped to handle insurance business the old fashioned way, as their vast labyrinth of offices spread throughout the country gives customers plenty of opportunities to drop by and chat face to face. For a more modern approach, customers can easily seek out help via telephone or e-mail. Regardless of approach, customers will find that the company’s representatives are all knowledgeable, professional, and quick to respond.

Final Review of State Farm Life Insurance

State Farm has been around for nearly a century because of their no-nonsense approach to handling insurance. By being approachable in terms of policy flexibility and service options, it’s not hard to envision that they’ll be providing insurance-related excellence for another century. Thank you for reading our State Farm review.

If #160;you bundle your homeowners insurance, auto insurance AND life insurance together, you'll pay lower rates overall. #160; This is simply NOT TRUE.#160;

State Farm Life Insurance Underwriting

State farm reviewWe've helped dozens of State Farm clients with their life insurance after they were declined by State Farm for a life insurance policy. When it comes down to any medium or high risk life insurance#160;policy, State Farm typically won't offer any coverage.

We've helped some consumers obtain standard or preferred rates when they were previously declined by State Farm. This includes very common impairments like: bipolar disorder, depression, PTSD, epilepsy and diabetes.

Other impairments like COPD, cancer history, multiple sclerosis, heart attacks and strokes are also insurable risks that we've personally seen State Farm decline and we've obtained affordable life insurance rates.

If you're in good health and don't have any medical issues, even State Farm life insurance's best health class doesn't compare to what you can obtain on the open market.

Our State Farm Life Insurance Review

I don't want this to sound like we're picking on State Farm because of their overpriced life insurance with below average underwriting. They really are a great company when it comes down to personal auto and homeowners. Life insurance just isn't in their wheelhouse.

So why would your friendly State Farm agent sell you an overpriced life insurance policy?

Well, State Farm's agents have life insurance quota's they have to meet. I actually feel bad for the agents because they HAVE to sell their over-priced life insurance. I hear this complaint from my State Farm agent friends (who I would never out) and on internet message boards. Here are 2 of those message board threads:

For those that don't have that relationship with their State Farm agent, we encourage you to give us a call.

State Farm Drive Safe #038; Save Review: A Lot of Tracking, But No Saving

State farm review

While State Farm will gladly track your driving habits, it is nearly impossible to actually get the discount reflected on your bill. And they have audacity to start charging for the privilege after 1 year.

A new gadget for my car that can save me money on insurance? Sounds too good to be true, so you can probably tell how this story will end. While State Farm will happily collect your data, they haven#8217;t quite figured out the whole #8220;discount#8221; thing yet.

UPDATE (Nov 2016): This review is for the 2014-version of the program. I#8217;ve been informed that tracking is now done with a smartphone app (instead of the OBD II dongle) and the pricing is now different. However, I would still be wary of how the #8220;discounts#8221; are actually applied to your premium, if they are applied at all.

This is the only useful information $72/year gets you.

Since my friends tell me I drive way too slow (like a #8220;grandpa#8221;, to be exact), I was intrigued when my local State Farm office sent me a letter stating that my safe driving could save me up to 50% on my insurance premium by subscribing to In-Drive. This service requires that you place a small tracking device in the OBD II data port of your car (most vehicles manufactured after 1996 have one). The device collects things like miles per gallon, your speed around turns, sudden stops, and other details about your driving habits. This information is automatically sent to the In-Drive service via a cellular connection to calculate your discount.

Some people will likely be wary of the fact that the device does contain a GPS chip to track your vehicle#8217;s location. While this could come in handy if your vehicle is ever stolen (and you have a police report to show to In-Drive), this may turn privacy-concerned drivers away from the service.

State farm review

The green dots are about the only details you#8217;ll get about your car#8217;s health.

Having nothing to hide about my daily commute to work and home, and the occasional weekend road trip, I signed up for the service and plugged the device into my car. The service immediately provided a diagnostic graphic of my car, showing any potential trouble spots as reported by the car#8217;s onboard computer. It#8217;s kind of like OnStar#8217;s diagnostic reports, but with a lot less detail.

You receive one free year of the In-Drive Basic Service, which at about $72 a year, is seriously lacking. If your check engine light comes on – which the In-Drive device can easily read the code for – it will be kept a secret from you until you pay for the next level of service, which is about $132 a year. If you want to see the approximate location of your vehicle if you lend it to a family member, that requires the premium service as well. And if you call customer service without having a credit card number on file, be prepared to be harassed about that on each and every call.

State farm review

Apparently, updating their error messages isn#8217;t a priority with In-Drive.

So I drive along happily while the device uploads my driving stats. Six months go by and the website estimates that I should save about $80 a year. I excitedly wait to see a $40 discount on my six-month renewal, but the bill comes and it is not there. #8220;Not enough data has been collected yet,#8221; is the decree from my State Farm agent. What?? It#8217;s odd that there is #8220;enough data#8221; that the website can throw a big savings number on the screen, but just not enough data to actually reduce my bill. No biggie, I foolishly think to myself. Maybe I#8217;ll see the whole $80 off my next renewal.

After another 6 months of good driving, my bill arrives and only reflects the paltry $40 discount (not the whole $80 that the website constantly displayed throughout the year). Well, my trial is up, so I guess I#8217;ll take it.

That $40 savings is not enough to offset the now $72 per year #8220;privilege#8221; of having State Farm track me, so I call up my agent and cancel the In-Drive service, and then send the device back to In-Drive. Not missing a beat, State Farm sends a bill a few days later for that $40 I had saved. W-what? Is this some kind of joke? My local agent looks into it and replies that the discount is only going forward, not for the driving history I had already earned, therefore, I need to pay my discount back. This contradicts the FAQ posted on State Farm#8217;s website:

How Often is my Safe Driver Discount Calculated When I am Enrolled with Drive Safe Save?

Your premium is adjusted at each policy renewal period (every six months) and will be based on the information collected from your communication service up to that point.

I#8217;m working on my right turns, but overall I would say that I#8217;m a decent driver.

I doubt I#8217;ll ever see this discount, which is fine. Switching auto insurance (and my housing insurance) in incredibly easy, so State Farm won#8217;t be seeing another payment from this customer who drives well, pays his bill on time, and hasn#8217;t filed a claim for as long as I have been their customer (over 10 years).

If State Farm wants this program to actually be successful, they need to waive the yearly service fee for the basic level In-Drive program, especially since the discounts don#8217;t offset the annual service fee (that is, if you actually ever see the discount). At the basic service level, seeing your miles per gallon stats is about the only useful detail that the In-Drive device will show you, which definitely isn#8217;t worth the $72 a year.

So if you#8217;re a State Farm customer and the In-Drive program rolls out to your state, think twice before enrolling. Forking over your privacy and then fighting to get the discount you earned is probably not worth your time and effort. Instead, your time will be better spent shopping around for a lower rate on your insurance.

UPDATE: A very nice representative from State Farm contacted me to further research my experience with the program. It was a combination of timing and my limited driving distance (which should be a discount in itself, shouldn#8217;t it?) that had led to me losing the discount I had earned. While they made a one-time exception in my case, the representative also informed me that this program was working as it was designed to, so it is possible that others will share my experience. However, I appreciate that State Farm stepped up to get some feedback about the program (and allowed me to vent) and I hope they are able to make improvements to it in the future so that if customers are willing to fork over their privacy, they at least see the discount they deserve.

If you#8217;re simply looking for ways to track your car#8217;s health with your smartphone, here are some alternatives to the Drive Safe Save program.

  • Automatic: This is an OBD II port dongle that connects to your smartphone and can estimate your MPG, diagnose your #8220;Check Engine#8221; light, and call for help if you#8217;re in an accident. There are no subscription fees and it works with iPhone and Android devices.
  • A cheap OBD II dongle for iPhone or Android and the Dash app: The Dash app (free) tracks your MPG, checks your #8220;Check Engine#8221; light along with a repair estimate, and scores your driving habits. It works with a wide range of OBD II dongles, some as low as $10. Please note that only WiFi-enabled (not Bluetooth) OBD II adapters will work with iOS devices.
  • A cheap OBD II dongle for iPhone or Android and the Dash Command app: The Dash Command app is more geared towards those who like tweaking their car#8217;s performance. It can measure horsepower, torque, and acceleration, as well as read the error code for your #8220;Check Engine#8221; light. It can basically show you any reading available from the OBD II interface and it also includes some very nice dashboard layouts.
  • Auto Care app: If you simply want to track your MPGs and don#8217;t mind some manual entry, the Auto Care app can help. It also tracks your other vehicle maintenance and keeps your data synced between iOS devices with iCloud.
